CAT 3116 Remanufactured, Rebuilt and Used Engines For Sale. Capital Reman Exchange is a nationally recognized remanufacturer of the Caterpillar 3116. We love building this engine because of the uncomplicated nature of internal parts including the camshaft, cylinder heads and crankshaft design.
I have one truck with a 3116 Cat in it with 116,000 miles on it.(1995 model with NO emissions) All I have EVER done to it is change fluids and filters and that's it. I have been also looking at other, similar trucks with 3116/3126 CATs in them to buy for a second truck. My questions are: Are the 3116 and 3126 about the same engine??? (What are the differences???)What should I be looking for when buying one and what should I be doing to them to keep them tuned up and maintained correctly????(Never really owned any diesels I had to work on before.).

We had a 3116 in a '90 Kodiak. It wasn't used often or very hard. The prior owner had bigger injectors installed in it. Our Cat dealer put it on the dyno and it made 225 hp. At the wheels. We only ever replaced a idler bearing in the 15+ years that we owned it. The engine was surprisingly efficient for that kind of horsepower.
The 3116 didn't like cold weather.started acting cranky under 50-degrees. The HEUI fuel injection system would crank and crank before it would fire.Back to your question about 3116 vs. 3126, it is my understanding that both engines are very similar. The 3116 displaces 1.1 liters per pot for a total displacement of 6.6 liters.

The 3126 displaces 1.2 liters per cylinder for a total displacement of 7.2 liters. Both use a HEUI fuel injection system of multiple oil-driven fuel pumps to step up the pressure. In on-highway applications the 3116 is a mechanical rackbar (MUI) controlled fuel system and the 3126 is a HEUI electronically controlled fuel system. There are MUI 3126's but they are found in industrial and OEM Cat equipment applications.I can go very in-depth on these as they came out and become fased out during my tenure as a Cat mechanic. Over-all, in lower HP applications I think it's a pretty good design. Higher HP and later HEUI engines leave a few things desired. For your 100,000 mile 3116, I would recomend a overhead adjust, fuel timing is determined by the injector rocker adjustment and they weren't set very well from the factory, ask for it to be set to the advanced side of spec- that's about one degree BTDC from nominal and will help with cold start smoke and give a little extra kick off the line.
