I think there is a thread where I mentioned this a while back. To be honest I like the UI in Sonarworks slightly more than Morphit, so it's the one I use most, but I have both plugins pre-loaded in my default templates. I think either one does as good a job as the other soundwise. Thanks Matt.
I never considered Sonarworks before because they didn't have curves for any of my open back headphoes listed but recently they added a model that I have (AKG Q701). I haven't bought any of the apps yet but I think I'll get Morphit then. Even on sale, Sonarworks is almost twice the price. I'd recommend trying the trial/demo versions first (I think both have versions you can test with). Using one of these headphone processors does involve some workflow changes (since SONAR doesn't have a bus for headphone plugins so you have to remember to turn if off before exporting). You might find it's not worth your time. The effect may be more on open back headphones (or may be less) I've never used an open back pair so I have no idea.
This is one area I'd recommend trial/demo first. I don't think Toneboosters ever does sales, so there is no rush for it. Sonarworks have sales often and I think sell through resellers. You should be able to get a good deal on it when you are ready. Fog you can trial both? I guess to get a subjective view.I guess I would have to spend many hours mixing and listening with both, and comparing with mixes made with monitors to have a well informed (although subjective) opinion. I think I'll not have time to do this before the Sonarworks sale ends.
I would consider spending another $60 this month only if there was a flood of answers saying that Sonarworks is a much better app. If that's not the case (as it seems) I'll get Morphit first and test it thoroughly. If I don't like the results, I'll consider Sonarworks again.
Just did a side by side comparison of Morphit and sonarworks headphone calibrations. Using steely dan's 'black cow' as the playback song, wav file. Calibration for a set of Audio-Technica ATH-M40x first off, i notice that the eq profile for the two different softwares, same headphones, are different. Not just mildly different. Second, i noticed that the high end turned blurry on both plug ins when turned off/on.
The bass went away, the high end crispiness disappeared, and the flat playback was something you would have to listen to for a long time to get used to. They both seemed to do about the same thing to the sound of the headphones. It flattens it out alright! But makes the midrange strange. Just my experience.
